Municipal Services

Through government funded programs, the municipality was given the opportunity to construct a new Municipal complex (annex to the local gymnasium), also known as the Grosse Ile Community Center.

Within the framework of this project, the Municipality is now able to house a new fitness center, community office space as well as a community kitchen and conference room.

In 2010, funding was secured once again in order to construct an infrastructure and outdoor rink near the softball field, by which physical activity has been enhanced in our community.

In 2012, we received funding to cement and polish the rink as well as extent the parking lot.

In order to purchase a membership for any municipal program, we ask that you visit the municipal office during regular business hours. Monday – Thursday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.

Message From The Mayor

On behalf of the Municipal Council, we are very pleased to offer you the opportunity to discover our municipality.  While browsing through our web site, I hope that it will entice you to visit the Magdalen Islands and discover the madelinot hospitality along with our natural, unique and picturesque sceneries.

Founded on November 29, 1892, the Municipality of Grosse Ile is one of the two municipalities which are part of the Îles-de-la-Madeleine Agglomeration Council and is located on the East end of the Islands with a population of 490, who are mainly Anglophone.

We have decided to use this means of communication in order to enhance our visibility and improve relations with our citizens and other people wishing to obtain information about our municipality and the services we provide. We are working to continuously improve our economic situation and well-being while respecting our identity.

Within our municipality, you may wish to visit the following sites: the Council for Anglophone Magdalen Islanders (CAMI), well-known for its history, culture and heritage depicted through its Little Red Schoolhouse and Veteran’s Museum; the magnificent Old Harry Beach (Plage de la Grande Échouerie), East Point National Wildlife Reserve, Brion Island Ecological Reserve, Bird Rock, Jacques Cartier Site, the beautiful Anglican Churches of Holy Trinity and St. Peter’s-By-The-Sea as well as the Grosse Ile fishing harbour that boasts an outstanding view of the surrounding areas.

The community of Grosse Ile has a lot to offer and it would be our pleasure to welcome you!

COME DISCOVER THE SERENITY AND PEACEFULLNESS OF NATURE…

Rose-Elmonde Clarke

Mayor

Municipal Council

The Municipality of Grosse Ile was reconstituted on January 1, 2006 after having demerged from the Municipalité des Îles-de-la-Madeleine.

Our town council is currently in the second year of their four year mandate and are extremely committed to serving their population.

Home page

Discover the Municipality of Grosse Ile, neatly nestled at the eastern end of the Magdalen Islands. Home to the world renowned Old Harry Beach, the Municipality can also boast of its quaint fishing harbour, red rock cliffs, and unspoiled natural beauty. One of the two English-speaking communities of the Islands, Grosse-Ile has a population of approximately 490 people.

Divided into five divisions, the Municipality of Grosse-Ile is spread over much of the East End of the Islands. Grosse Ile, East Cape, and Old Harry are all populated areas of the Municipality, and are located within minutes of one another. Brion Island and Bird Rock, however, are uninhabited islands, removed from the main Island.

Within the Municipality, there are many interesting sites to explore. The Mine Seleine, a salt mine, sits directly beside Route 199, and facts about the mine can be obtained from the Gateway to the East Interpretation Center, an information portal located only metres from the mine. The Grosse-lle harbour, home to the Cape Dauphin Fishermen’s Cooperative, is located in Grosse-Ile North, and is one of the main centres of activity in the Municipality. In addition, a main point of interest is the East Point National Wildlife Reserve, which stretches easterly from Grosse Ile to Old Harry and is one of the most natural, untouched areas of the Islands. Also found within the Municipality is a combined, elementary and secondary school, a gymnasium, and municipal offices; as well, there are two churches, a fire station, a post office, various businesses, community organizations and cultural museums.

With a different Island flavour, and interesting and natural surroundings, the Municipality of Grosse Ile is well worth your discovery: It will be a unique and welcoming experience!
